The Mooresville Police Department is about to become one of the first departments in America to deploy high-tech drones to track robbery and theft suspects fleeing crime scenes.
Starting from headquarters at U.S. 21 and Brawley School Road, trained dispatchers will launch drones with a single command. The aircraft will follow suspect descriptions reported via 911, quickly responding at speeds up to 58 mph—often faster than patrol officers.
The cutting-edge MATRICE 30T drones are equipped with thermal cameras, zoom lenses, and laser rangefinders. They can operate in extreme temperatures and fly in poor weather, giving officers a real-time view of suspects until ground units arrive.
Mooresville is now one of only 12 departments nationwide using this drone technology for law enforcement. Officials say the effort improves safety, speeds up suspect location, and provides critical surveillance during emergencies.
Local residents can learn more about the initiative through the free six-week Citizens Academy, which offers behind-the-scenes access to town departments.
