A massive great white shark weighing 1,437 pounds has been detected off the North Carolina coast, according to OCEARCH. The nonprofit began tracking the 13-foot-3-inch shark, named “Breton,” in 2020 using satellite tags that record 24 types of critical data, including genetics, migration patterns, and reproductive status.
OCEARCH, a global leader in ocean research and shark conservation, has tagged nearly 500 sharks since 2007 through almost 50 expeditions. The organization collaborates with more than 90 research institutions worldwide to map vital shark habitats and improve conservation strategies.
Earlier this year, the group tagged its largest male white shark ever, “Contender”.
If you’re on swimming at any North Carolina beaches in the next few weeks, experts recommend taking extra precautions, including removing all shiny jewelry, wearing magnetic shark repellents, and avoiding wearing colorful swimsuits.
Your risk will increase if you go near the water at dusk or at night.
