A lightning strike at Lake Murray sent 12 people to the hospital on Monday, including eight children and four adults. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. near the beach area of the Lake Murray dam, according to Lexington County officials.

In total, first responders assessed 20 people—12 children and 8 adults. All injuries were non-life-threatening, and everyone is expected to recover.

Prisma Health said five patients were treated at Parkridge, and 10 more—two adults and eight children—were taken to Prisma Health and its Children’s Hospital. Three children were admitted for further care, while others remain under evaluation.

The beach was temporarily closed but is expected to reopen Wednesday after a safety inspection.

Officials remind residents to leave the water immediately when storms approach and to monitor weather alerts during outdoor activities.
