To get you excited for the action, here are some of the top moments in NASCAR history that have transpired on the Charlotte Motor Speedway track:

Dale Earnhardt’s Dominating Win In 1993

There are few names as synonymous with NASCAR racing as Dale Earnhardt, otherwise known as the Intimidator, and Charlotte Motor Speedway was home to some of his most iconic victories. Even during a poor 1992, it was at Charlotte that Earnhardt proved he was still a champion, claiming his only victory that season in the Coca-Cola 600.

But 1993 proved to be an altogether different story. Winning both The Winston and the Daytona Pepsi 400, his most impressive victory came on his return to the Coca-Cola 600. His carefree technique saw him surge from a lap behind to claim an unforgettable win.

But the Intimidator has a long and impressive history in Charlotte. He made his points race debut in 1975 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway!

Jeff Gordon’s Maiden Win In 1994

Jeff Gordon was destined to become a NASCAR legend, even during the 1994 season when he was the new guy on the scene. But for everyone watching that season’s Coca-Cola 600, it was obvious that this guy was going to go far.

Still a young rookie, Gordon cruised to victory in Charlotte, catapulting his name into the history books. It was the first of his many Cup Series wins and the beginning of a legacy of greatness.

Jimmie Johnson’s Record-Breaking Run In 2004-2005

The early 2000s saw Jimmie Johnson dominate the NASCAR racing scene. After fishing fifth in 2002, his first full season, he went on to win 5 consecutive Cup Series Championships between 2006 and 2010.

One of the most impressive displays of Johnson’s consistency came at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. In 2004-2005 he became the first driver to win both the Coca-Cola 600 and the Bank of America Royal 400 in consecutive years.

Jimmie Johnson’s unmatched consistency and skill lead him to plenty of success at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. He currently holds the record as the track’s all-time winningest Cup Series driver with eight overall.

Kyle Busch’s Trifecta In 2010

“Rowdy” Kyle Busch proved his wild driving style could dominate in 2010, with a series of wins across the nation. He made history by becoming the first driver to win all three NASCAR National series — Cup, Xfinity, and Truck — during a single weekend at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

In fact, both the Busch brothers have seen success at Charlotte Motor Speedway. In 2010, Kyle took the Tech-Net Auto Service 300 and the N.C. Education Lottery 200, while Kurt Nusch took the Coca-Cola 600 and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. Pretty impressive for one family!

Chase Elliott’s Comeback In 2020

The back of the field is never where you want to start your race, but for Chase Elliott in 2020, it proved surprisingly advantageous. He claimed an improbable victory at the Bank of America Roval 400, navigating his way from the back of the pack to the top of the podium.

Considered one of the most talented young drivers in NASCAR, Elliott’s unexpected 2020 victory proved why he was tipped to be the next big thing in racing. A promise that the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series champion more than lived up to!

The Charlotte Motor Speedway has hosted the making of NASCAR legends, with some of racing’s biggest names achieving iconic victories on the track. From the historic dominance of Dale Earnhardt to the future promise of Chase Elliott, Charlotte Motor Speedway has seen it all.
