Charlotte Tourism Hits Record-Breaking $1.1 Billion Milestone in 2024

The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority (CRVA) announced a record-breaking $1.1 billion economic impact for fiscal year 2024, driven by tourism, major events, and venue operations. This achievement underscores Charlotte’s growing reputation as a premier destination for leisure and business travelers. Key contributors included $640.6 million from leisure marketing, $177.6 million from conventions, $179.6 million from sports events, $74.9 million from the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and $29.2 million from the BOplex venues.

The Charlotte Convention Center generated $143.6 million, boosted by hosting 45 citywide conventions and nine sports events. The NASCAR Hall of Fame attracted over 201,000 visitors, contributing significantly to local economic activity. Sports events like the ACC Football Championship and Duke’s Mayo Bowl further enhanced Charlotte’s profile, collectively adding over $39 million to the economy. Additionally, the CRVA’s $8 million advertising investment drove 336,000 room nights and $54.6 million in hotel revenue.

Tourism remains a cornerstone of Charlotte’s economy, with direct visitor spending reaching $8 billion annually. One in nine Charlotte residents is employed in the hospitality sector, highlighting the industry’s critical role in job creation.

“Tourism continues to be a driving force behind Charlotte’s economic vitality, fueling job creation, boosting local businesses, and generating substantial tax revenue that benefits the entire community,” said CRVA CEO Steve Bagwell in a press release. “These record-breaking results reflect Charlotte’s momentum as a premier destination. As we continue to attract major events and expand our leisure tourism footprint, we are committed to delivering even greater economic value for our community. The future of Charlotte’s tourism economy has never been brighter.”
