Charlotte FC extended its winning streak to seven Sunday night with a 1-0 victory over the New York Red Bulls, the longest active run in Major League Soccer this season.
Kerwin Vargas scored in the 30th minute after Idan Toklomati intercepted a pass and set him up near the penalty spot. Vargas’ strike slipped under the crossbar for the match’s only goal.
Goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina secured his fourth consecutive shutout with four saves. He has not allowed a goal since July 19 against Atlanta United.
The Red Bulls managed 15 shots but failed to score and lost a seat in the conference, while Charlotte’s home record improved to 11-2-1. The result lifted Charlotte (15-11-2) into fourth place in the Eastern Conference, tied on points with Orlando City SC.
With six matches remaining, Charlotte is closing in on securing home-field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
