Governor Cooper and US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg have announced that four North Carolina airports will receive a share of nearly $1 billion in federal grants from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
This funding, aimed at modernizing 114 airports across the U.S., allocates $27 million to the Charlotte Douglas Airport, as well as an additional $18 million to the Triangle, Wilmington, and Spruce Pine airports in North Carolina.
The grants will support projects such as replacing passenger board bridges at Charlotte Douglas International Airport and expanding the terminal at Raleigh-Durham International Airport, among others.
This funding is part of the Airport Terminal Program under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which aims to significantly upgrade the nation’s infrastructure, including a $415 billion investment in transportation over five years.
“Under this administration, we are doing more to improve the travel experience than ever before, from expanding consumer protections to modernizing the physical infrastructure,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg in a press release. “These investments we’re announcing today, made possible by President Biden’s historic infrastructure package, will make it easier for passengers to get to and through airports, create jobs, and increase safety for all.”
