NoDa’s Matheson Avenue is about to get a major makeover to become far less car friendly in favor of bikers and pedestrians.
Last night, the Charlotte City Council approved a $12.9 million project that will reduce the road from four car lanes down to just two, and add 2 bike lanes to either side of the street.
The city is hoping the change will promote more cycling along Matheson Avenue and throughout NoDa in general.
Objectives of the Project:
- Create an east-west bicycle route from the Shamrock Drive Complete Street project to the Cross Charlotte Trail at Jordan Place.
- Lessen Matheson Avenue’s impediment to north-south pedestrian transit, adding more crossing points along the route.
- Enhance safety by calming traffic and lowering vehicle speeds in the area.
Community Engagement:
Local residents and business proprietors will be invited to participate in upcoming public meetings to express their views. The project team will also periodically send updates via postcards and the project’s website.
