Charlotte City Council approved a $3.6 billion budget on Monday, outlining major spending priorities for the upcoming fiscal year. The adopted plan includes targeted investments in youth programs, nonprofit support, and community wellness initiatives.
Councilwoman Dimple Ajmera, who leads the city’s budget committee, emphasized youth services as a key priority. As a result, the Greater Enrichment Program received its full $200,000 request to provide free after-school care in Title One schools.
During a final adjustment round on June 2, the council allocated over $1.2 million to the One-Time Discretionary Financial Partner program. This expansion, funded by federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars, supports organizations such as DreamKey Partners, The Males Place, Roof Above, and The Save Our Children Movement.
Additional late amendments included:
-
$1.5 million over three years for employee wellness programs
-
$200,000 to help host the NAACP National Convention in Charlotte
-
$300,000 for the Helping Hands Foundation
Council also authorized the city manager to pursue alternate funding for a proposed exhibit at the Charlotte Museum of History.
