This week, stargazers will witness a stunning cosmic show: a rare blue supermoon accompanied by a unique viewing of Saturn.
On Wednesday night, Augusts’ second full moon will grace the skies above Charlotte, earning its ‘blue moon’ label.
This supermoon will be the closest of the year at approximately 222,043 miles (357,344 kilometers) from Earth. This distance is notably closer than the supermoon on Aug. 1st.
At the same time, Saturn will gleam 5 degrees to the moon’s upper right at sunset in the east-southeast horizon. As the evening progresses, it’ll seem as if Saturn will be dancing with the moon.
If you like looking at big moons, don’t miss this one, as the next ‘blue supermoon’ won’t appear until May 2037, according to NASA.
It’s a bird! 🦅 It’s a plane! ✈️ It’s a… supermoon! 🌕 Don’t forget to check out the “super blue moon” on Aug. 31. It is called a super blue moon because it is a supermoon and the second full moon in a single calendar month. Learn more: https://t.co/cA0Y9UQS88 pic.twitter.com/RDOcsB6fIm
