Tropical Depression Chantal brought severe weather to central North Carolina Sunday night, causing deadly flooding, tornadoes, and widespread damage. Officials confirmed three storm-related deaths in Chatham, Person, and Alamance counties, all involving vehicles swept away by floodwaters.
The National Weather Service confirmed at least four tornadoes touched down in areas including Sanford, Moncure, Mebane, and Snow Camp. Major highways, including I-85 and I-40 near Durham, were temporarily closed, with I-40 in Alamance County now reopened.
Thousands lost power, and Governor Josh Stein declared states of emergency in Alamance, Person, Moore, and Orange counties.
