As home prices and rents continue to rise, salaries for one of our most important professions have not kept pace in many parts of the country, creating a growing housing affordability crisis that has forced many teachers into financial hardship. This could have a tremendous impact on the future of the U.S. education system and highlights the disparities between teachers and those in non-teaching professions that have achieved similar levels of education.
Their study found that:

- In the Charlotte metro, 21.5% of primary-earner teachers are burdened by their housing costs.
- The teacher cost burden rate in the Charlotte metro is 76.9% higher than the rate for households where the primary earner is a non-teacher with a college degree.
- The median income of teachers in the Charlotte metro is 33.8% less than the median income of full-time workers with Bachelor’s degrees employed in non-teaching professions.
