North Carolina Hires Dozens of New License Examiners to Ease DMV Strain

The North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles has just filled all 64 newly created driver’s license examiner positions, aiming to ease long wait times and improve customer service at its offices. The hires come just one month after Governor Josh Stein signed a spending bill to fund the new roles.

Commissioner Paul Tine, State Auditor Dave Boliek, and other state leaders have stressed the importance of addressing staffing shortages as the state’s population continues to grow.

The newly hired examiners will begin training in the coming weeks before being deployed statewide. While the additional staff is expected to help reduce strain, officials note that systemic challenges remain. To address broader issues, the DMV plans to open four new offices in the near future and hire 33 more employees over the next year.

Lawmakers are also weighing legislation that would expand online services, allowing more DMV transactions to be completed virtually. Supporters say this could further relieve in-person demand and modernize operations across the system.
