Charlotte-Area Schools Close After Breaking Historic 1,037-Day Snow Drought

Charlotte received her first measurable snowfall since 2022 late last night, breaking a snowless streak that lasted 1,037 days.

Snowfall occurred as favorable atmospheric conditions brought flurries from Monday evening into early Tuesday morning, particularly affecting areas just north and west of the city.

The snow left behind a dusting, with some locations seeing totals up to 1.5 inches, especially near the I-40 corridor between Statesville and Concord.

The snowfall led to school schedule disruptions in the region due to icy road conditions.

Many schools announced changes for Tuesday:

School Schedule Changes:

  • Remote Learning:
    • Avery County Schools
    • Ashe County Schools
    • Watauga County Schools
  • Two-Hour Delays:
    • Alexander County Schools
    • Mooresville Schools
    • Lincoln County Schools
  • Closed:
    • Iredell-Statesville Schools

While the snow was light, the subfreezing temperatures created the potential for icy and unsafe roads.

According to WeatherUnderground, the conditions in Charlotte will continue to remain cold this week with slightly higher temps and rain expected for early next week:
