A 20-mile stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock has reopened, including the iconic viaduct section, arguably the most popular section of the iconic drive.
This reopening marks a significant recovery milestone since Hurricane Helene struck the mountain region, leaving widespread destruction and fatalities. Parkway officials remind drivers that the Blue Ridge Parkway is not suitable for commercial vehicles, as it lacks truck lanes or pull-over spaces. Violators could face fines of up to $5,000 to ensure safety on the narrow, curving two-lane road.
Although parts of the parkway are accessible, some facilities remain closed for ongoing repairs. The areas still closed include the interior of Moses Cone Manor House, Carriage Barn restrooms, Boone Fork Trail, and Price Park Campground. However, visitors can now access Bass Lake, the Moses Cone Manor House parking area, and Price Lake Picnic Area, though some restrooms may not be available.
Visitors are urged to proceed with caution while exploring, as trails have not been fully assessed for damage, and hazards such as landslides, tree debris, and washed-out sections may be present. Officials continue to work on restoring the Blue Ridge Parkway, striving to safely reopen all sections impacted by the storm while prioritizing public safety.
