The South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) has introduced the ‘Free to Focus SC‘ initiative, a statewide effort aimed at reducing digital distractions in classrooms. This follows the recent approval of a model cell phone policy by the State Board of Education.
Set for statewide implementation in January 2025, the policy seeks to limit smartphone use in schools, fostering an environment free from constant digital interruptions. Local school districts will begin finalizing the rollout of the policy this fall.
The initiative’s goal is to enhance student focus on essential skills outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. It emphasizes face-to-face interactions, peer collaboration, and skills vital for success in college, careers, and life.
A recent survey of 9,738 educators revealed that cell phones are a major source of distraction, contributing to behavior issues, cheating, and cyberbullying. Teachers reported that frequent phone use during class leads to lost instructional time and declining academic performance.

‘Free to Focus SC’ will provide resources for educators, parents, and students, including guidance, Public Service Announcements (PSAs), and linkhouse tools to ease the transition.
The initiative’s homepage will be regularly updated with new information to support schools throughout the implementation process.
