Gen Z renter households in Charlotte jumped sixfold in five years, from roughly 8,500 to nearly 60,000. Today, 82% of Gen Z adults here rent. On the ownership side, buyers among this age group grew fivefold to 13,250.
What makes Charlotte stand out? It’s not the fastest-growing metro in North Carolina for Gen Z renters — that’s Raleigh, with a twelvefold increase. And it doesn’t have the highest homeownership rate — that’s Winston-Salem, sitting at 26%. But Charlotte leads in scale, with the biggest Gen Z renter and owner populations in the state, powered by a 210% income growth and the strongest job growth among NC’s major metros — 8%.
