Drivers near Lake Norman should prepare for major detours as the state closes the intersection of Brawley School Road and U.S. 21 for six months, Mooresville officials just confirmed.
The closure is part of a $51.1 million North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) project to widen Brawley School Road from I-77 Exit 35 to U.S. 21. Construction began in June 2024 and is expected to last three years.
The project will add new lanes, sidewalks, and a redesigned intersection at U.S. 21 and Brawley School Road/West Wilson Avenue, long known for traffic backups. NCDOT says the upgrades will ease congestion, improve safety, and make the corridor more pedestrian-friendly.
Roadside message boards will go up Monday, Sept. 8, warning drivers about the closure. A detailed detour plan will also be shared early next week.
