Last night we saw the second major upset for North Carolina after the Panthers suffered a surprising defeat to the Broncos. For the national title of college basketball, Villanova upset UNC with a final score of 77-74 – a game that will undoubtedly go down in history.
The UNC Tar Heels took control in the first half, coming as somewhat of a surprise, considering they were 0-12 to start their national semifinal game against Syracuse on Saturday. They owned the glass in the first half, with 10 defensive rebounds and five offensive boards.
North Carolina was 26-4 with leading at halftime this season, while Villanova was 1-4 when trailing. This was the first time the Wildcats have been behind at the break during the NCAA Tournament.
North Carolina and Villanova had a total of eight lead changes, along with six ties, in the first half. In the end, Villanova was up by three and UNC just wasn’t able to make that come-back drive.
Although Villanova won the championship, North Carolina made its 10th NCAA title game appearance, with coach Roy Williams making his fifth appearance after going 2-2 across 28 seasons at North Carolina and Kansas.
A second-place finish in both the NFL and the NCAA proves that North Carolina is truly one of the best states in the nation!
