A Russian spy ship, the Viktor Leonov, was just spotted about 100 miles off the coast of Wilmington, North Carolina, in international waters, according to US military officials.

The vessel was last seen leaving the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain late last week.

The Viktor Leonov is outfitted with a variety of high-tech spy equipment and designed to intercept communications signals.

This was the furthest north the ship has traveled up our eastern seaboard. The Russian spy ship was last seen off the East Coast of the U.S. about two years ago after traveling up from Venezuela;

It’s unclear at the time where the vessel is headed, or how far north it will travel.

Military officials say it’s currently being tracked by the destroyer USS Cole and other naval assets.
