gaston boy accident12-year-old Zachary Dillion Saunders, of Shelby, was the tragic victim of a truck accident on i-85 in Gaston County this past weekend.

Gary Alphonso Thomas, the driver of the 18-wheeler, told the police that he pulled off the road to take a phone call, then got back into the right lane and immediately felt the box truck hit his trailer. Thomas, is now accused of accidentally killing Saunders and has been charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle (impeding traffic and making an unsafe movement). He was booked into Gaston County Jail on a $1 million bond.

Family members of Zachary Dillion Saunders have now set up a GoFundMe page to assist with funeral costs (they didn’t have a life insurance policy on him), and the community has been responding in an incredible way.
