Charlotte Start-Up Invented The World’s First 100% Alpaca Performance Shirt

Charlotte-based Appalachian Gear Company (AGC) is trying to make their mark in the outdoors and performance clothing industry with their patented new process for thin knitting with natural Alpaca fibers.

Alpaca fibers are normally spun into thick wool strands, similar to sheep’s wool, limiting its usage to products like sweaters, socks, and blankets. AGC has now invented a new way of spinning the fibers into tight thin sheets that, to their surprise, perform even better than synthetic performance fibers (used in polyester running shirts).

The company launched a Kickstarter campaign to start manufacturing here in Charlotte and they exceeded their goal by 115%;
