Two tractor trailers burst into flames last night at about at about 8:16 p.m. after a head-on collision on northbound I-85.
The accident occurred near the border of North and South Carolina, just north of Exit 106.
Cherokee County Coroner Dennis Fowler just released a statement saying that one man was pronounced dead at the scene and two other people were rushed to a nearby hospital.
According to statement, the driver of a 2007 Freightliner tractor-trailer heading north, crossed into the median, clipped the cable barrier and continue driving straight into the southbound lanes.
All northbound lanes were shut down for over 5 hours. According to the SCDOT, some lanes began opening up just after 1:30 a.m. this morning.
If you’re heading north from SC, you can take Exits 102 or 106 to Hwy 29, the get back onto I-85 via NC 216 at exit 2.
